Range is the figure that weighs most when buying an electric bike… and the least reliable. Manufacturers measure it with minimal assistance, on flat ground and with lightweight riders. To give you a realistic benchmark, at NovoDix we calculate the estimated real-world range of every model from the one thing that doesn't lie: its battery capacity in watt-hours (Wh).

The result: on average, 37% less than advertised

Applying the same formula to the 69 models in the catalogue with complete data, real-world range in normal use is on average 37% lower than claimed.

NovoDix methodology: estimated real-world range = battery capacity ÷ 10–14 Wh/km (mixed use, medium assistance, an adult weighing 75–85 kg, some hills). The difference is calculated using the midpoint of the range against the figure claimed by the manufacturer. Catalogue data as of September 2026.

What drains the battery most

  • Assistance level: the maximum setting can double consumption compared with the minimum.
  • Total weight: every extra 10 kg increases consumption by 5–8%.
  • Hills and wind: the biggest factor after assistance level.
  • Wide tyres: fat bikes use more energy than city bikes.
  • Cold: below 5 °C the battery can deliver 10–20% less.

How to use this table

Work out your daily distance (round trip), multiply it by 1.3 as a safety margin and compare it with the low end of the real-world range. If you only want to charge once or twice a week, multiply by the number of days you will ride.

For more context, see our guide to the battery: lifespan, charging costs and care.

Frequently asked questions

Why is real-world range lower than advertised?

Because manufacturers measure it in ideal conditions: minimal assistance, flat ground, no wind and lightweight riders. In normal use, consumption is higher.

How do I calculate the real-world range of an electric bike?

Divide the battery's Wh by 10–14 Wh/km. A 720 Wh battery gives roughly 50–70 km of real-world range with medium assistance.

Which electric bike has the longest real-world range?

In the NovoDix catalogue, the DUOTTS C29-K with its 1,800 Wh battery, with an estimated 130–180 km in real-world use.
